Press Release: Segasist’s Auto-Contouring Software Successfully
Validated at London Health Sciences Centre
Successful completion of validation studies of Segasist software
for prostate auto-contouring
April 4, 2011 (Toronto, ON) – Segasist Technologies,
a Canadian software company developing automated image contouring
methods for biomedical applications announced today the successful
completion of validation studies of its software for prostate auto-contouring.
Segmentation of the prostate gland in different modalities can
be time consuming and may be subject to inter- and intra-observer
variability. “The purpose of this validation was to perform
a rigorous technological assessment and validation, in terms of
accuracy, time-savings and ergonomics, of a software package/algorithm
that can auto-contour prostate MRI datasets” says Dr. George
Rodrigues, the principal investigator and a radiation oncologist
at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).
The multi-phase validation, conducted by several radiation oncologists,
started in September 2010 and ended in February 2011. “The
Segasist auto-contouring software has been validated to assist clinicians
in the segmentation of prostate MRI datasets in terms of contouring
time and accuracy”, states the executive summary of the validation
report, “This auto-contouring algorithm provides robust contours
that, in general, require minimal additional editing by the user.
The observed time-savings were seen for all physicians irrespective
of experience level and baseline manual contouring speed.”
Segasist software is the first commercial software of its kind
providing a complete solution for segmentation and volumetric measurements
of the prostate gland in MR images. The software can perform auto-contouring
in CT scans and ultrasound images as well. The validation study
was supported by Precarn
Inc. and Health
Technology Exchange (HTX).
“The positive results of the clinical validation are extremely
encouraging for us”, says Hamid Tizhoosh, CEO of Segasist
Technologies, “this will not only assist us to get the software
to the hospitals, after we have regulatory approval, but will also
pave the road to fully exploit the immense potentials of our technology
for future products.”

About Segasist Technologies
Segasist Technologies is a software company based in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada focused on developing volumetric analysis productivity
tools for use with advanced visualization modalities including MR,
Ultrasound, and CT. The company's premiere product - Segasist segmentation
assistant software - is initially thought to be feasible for use
in improving accuracy in delineating healthy versus unhealthy tissue
in radiation planning and radiology. Segasist is a flexible solution;
it can be applied to a multitude of medical image types, integrated
into existing commercial visualization and planning software, or
used as a plug-in productivity tool in a clinical setting.
