News Release: Segasist showcases its new consensus contouring
software, Reconcillio™, at RSNA 2011 in Chicago
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 23, 2011 (Toronto, ON) – Segasist Technologies,
a Canadian software company developing automated image contouring
tools for medical applications, announced today that it will showcase
its latest consensus auto-contouring software, Reconcillio™,
along with its recently FDA 510k cleared prostate auto-contouring
software, Segasist P-AC, later this month at the
97th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of RSNA (Radiological
Society of North America) at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.
Reconcillio’s automated capabilities build computational consensus
among clinical experts with respect to the exact boundaries of tumors/oragns
and also verify a clinician’s consistency in contouring. Unlike
other contouring software, Reconcillio can automatically generate
consensus contours for any medical image –
without requiring multiple clinicians to delineate the same image.
“Contouring is highlighting the tumours/organs boundaries
in medical images,” explains Dr. Hamid Tizhoosh, the CEO of
Segasist Technologies, “doctors contour differently. Even
the same doctor may contour the same image differently, if observed
for a second time. This has been a persistent problem hindering
quality control. If several doctors are in the room to mark the
same image, then a ‘consensus contour’ could be easily
built. However, this is not a realistic solution, for we don’t
have the luxury of multiple doctors treating/diagnosing the same
patient.”
Indeed, the variability in marking medical images is sometimes
so drastic that experts may agree on only 50% of the total delineated
target volume or even less.
“Having access to consensus is pivotal for reducing, or
ideally removing the variability” says Tizhoosh, “Reconcillio,
for the first time, enables us to provide an expert with consensus
contours without depending on explicit contouring by their colleagues.
Reconcillio can also help decrease intra-observer variability by
verifying the consistency of the same user using the information
of previous cases contoured by that user.”
The Network version of Reconcillio, available after RSNA, is capable
of creating and accessing contouring knowledge in a network accessible
to multiple doctors.
“We believe the computational consensus concept of Reconcillio
will revolutionize the contouring landscape in medical imaging,”
says Tizhoosh, “Now that Reconcillio can operate in a network,
new horizons open up to merge contouring innovations with cloud
computing platforms.”
Segasist P-AC, the company’s flagship prostate contouring
software, which recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) 510(k) clearance will also be demonstrated at the show.
Segasist P-AC is a software tool developed for the purpose of
segmenting MR, CT and Ultrasound images of the prostate gland for
diagnostic and treatment-planning purposes. It can be trained by
individual clinicians to accurately and quickly process prostate
images, including fast slice-by-slice auto-contouring and volumetric
calculations.
“We are already developing new versions of P-AC enriched
with more valuable and exciting features and functionalities”
adds Hamid Tizhoosh, “DICOM-RT capabilities, a variety of
visualization schemes, more comprehensive editing tools, unlimited
number of contours per slice, and, of course, faster and even better
segmentation. Our ultimate goal is to exploit the potential of the
Segasist Engine. Segasist P-AC is just the beginning.
